Published in ‘Deccan Herald‘, Bangalore Edition on 3rd January 2013

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Today Commerce/Business Education is the second most attractive degree course after the engineering. This is due to quick placement and attractive salary to the candidates. Employers prefer commerce graduates because of conceptual/theoretical knowledge of business which is useful to the organisational activities. And recruitment of such Commerce Degree candidates reduces the cost of training. To make it more attractive and practice oriented, every college should start Commerce Laboratory and demonstrate the business activities.

Today, all professional educational courses have wide demand in the job which market is mainly because of practicals i.e, application of theory in laboratory and practice with different experiments. It makes the concepts clear. Hence, many educationists suggested establishing Commerce Laboratory in every Degree College and Post-graduate centre. In addition, they suggest, the students should be taken to Banks, Factories, Business Organisations, Markets, Offices etc to show the actual working. They can understand the real situation of the business and get confidence of setting their own venture instead of working under some person.

Earlier commerce graduates belonging to urban/industrial areas were absorbed quickly because of good communication and presentation skills. But today due to development in communication and transportation, rural candidates are also employed by the employers due to common syllabus. Further,  the turnover  rate of  rural candidates in job market is less compared with urban candidates. Now the enrollment to commerce education by the girl students is increased. Thus, currently it is very difficult to get a seat in a good college by a meritorious student. In almost all colleges, the seats are full.

The trade and commerce is rapidly increased due to liberalisation, globalisation and privatisation. This requires more number of commerce graduates and also commerce professionals like Chartered Accountants, Company Secretaries, Cost Accountants, MBA Graduates. Our Commerce Professionals are .highly demanded in the world as Financial Adviser/ Consultant / Auditor. Though any degree holder can join the the above mentioned commerce professional course, but the commerce degree holders will have more scope of success. Hence, there is greater preference to commerce course. Practical oriented and introduction of specialization in degree level course of study will enhance the scope of the commerce students in the job market.

Commerce Laboratory:

The Commerce laboratory is a new concept, wherein students practice their theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom. In addition students carry on more and more experiments. Mock commerce/business activities are undertaken in laboratory. By this method of learning and practicing, candidates will develop self-confidence of running a business profitably and understand the practical difficulties.

Considering the importance of practicals in Commerce/Business Education, Sri Pratap Memorial Rajput College of Commerce (Jammu and Kashmir State), The Deccan Education Society’s Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce, Pune (2003), The Maharashtra Education Society’s (MES) Garware College of Commerce Pune (Maharashtra State), Patna Women’s College (PWC), Patna (2010), have established the Commerce Laboratory. The Osmania University during 2008, in its Board of Studies meeting approved the budget proposal for establishing Commerce Laboratory in every college and in every post-graduate department.

It is very difficult to list out, what the laboratory should have and what kind of practicals to be conducted/demonstrated/practiced. However, a well trained/knowledgeable teacher can develop any number of practical exercises to make the candidate understand the concepts.

The first and foremost thing is to provide a well furnished Room with Internet connectivity. Keep teaching aids like Projector, Video Camera, Multimedia, Laptop, TV, CD, LCD Player, Public Address System etc. to be provided to help and practice. Seating arrangement is to be made for conducting meeting, interview, and group discussion. using public address system.

Hence, practical submission of returns to be practiced in the college itself by the students.

  5. Invite Non-commerce students and the Public to visit the lab. and understand  the business transactions.

The above list is sample activities to be done in the lab. A creative teacher can develop number of activities to suit the present business situations.  The laboratory will also help a teacher to undertake research work and perform extension services.

Conclusion:

Establishing a Commerce Lab. does solve some of the practical problems faced by the students. The Evaluation of students’ performance is to be made not only on theory but on performance in the lab. UGC and Government take initiative in establishing Commerce Lab. in every college to impart practical knowledge to the Commerce students like Science students.

Published in ‘Deccan Herald‘,Education, Bangalore Edition on 25th October 2012

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Now Teachers in Colleges and Universities are designted as Professors, Assistant or Associate. This new designation was introduced by University Grants Commission when the new pay-scales were revised. The same designations are extended to the teachers of Karnataka by passing the order on 24th December 2009 by the Government of Karnataka.

When UGC revised the designations, it expects the teachers in higher educational institutions to be highly qualified and contribute to the field of education through research and research publications. If the teacher improves his qualification and qualities, automatically the quality of students will also improve.

Thus, the revised UGC, in its regulations 2010,  on minimum qualifications for the appointment of teachers and in universities and colleges made it compulsory that, no Associate Professor and Professor will be appointed or promoted unless he/she possess Ph.D. qualification. In addition, he/she should publish the research papers in Journals.  However, it provided an opportunity to the in service teachers to improve his/her qualification by using the study leave provision. Various incentives were also introduced  by the UGC to the candidates who have acquired the Ph.D./M.Phil degree before recruitment and to the teachers who have acquired such qualification during their period of service.

NAAC, an Institution established by the UGC to assess the quality of education in Higher Educational Institutions grant the quality grades to the HEIs on the basis of the number of faculties with Ph.D.or M.Phil qualifications. It also considers, Research Publications. The Higher educational institutions are recognised & known globally through the number and quality of research and research publications.

The 12th Five year plan budget allocation on education has been raised to Rs. 1,84,000 crore from the previous plan of Rs. 85,000 Crores. It estimates the increase of Gross Enrollment Rate (GER) to 30 per cent at the end of the plan period from the present 20 percent among the eligible group of 18 to 22 Years.

As Ph.D. Degree becomes the basic qualification for the appointment or promotions, candidates are eager to register for the course. The course may be done under regular or on part-time basis by registering in a recognised University/Research Centre. During this period of study, teacher will get full salary, in addition contingency grant of Rs. 15,000 per year for the course. Post of Professor:

The new UGC 2006 created post of Professor in a degree College. Accordingly, the number of posts of profesors in a college shall be equivalent to 10 per cent of number of posts of Associate Professors. Out of such posts, one-fourth (25%) shall be filled through direct recruitment and three-fourth (75%) under Career Advancement Scheme of promotion. There was no such provision in earlier UGC regulations. However, the identification of post of professors should be made by the concerned University in consultation with the college. Thus, now the college teachers can enjoy the designation of professor, the highest designation to a teacher in the field of education.

Publications:

The publications are compulsory to the teachers for the post of Associate Professor or Professors, may be with direct recruitment or through CAS promotion. Under direct recruitment for the post of professor, the candidate should have published 10 research papers/articles with ISBN/ISSN and for Associate professors it is 5 publications.
